I caught a very large keeper gag grouper on a jig in very shallow water while night fishing from shore on a jig. In this video I also help an Asian man land a huge cobia that he possibly never would have landed. I use my new bridge net and light for filming at night for the first time. You'll also hear some insight into catching grouper and snook on jigs at night.
A few weeks ago there was a young man fishing along a seawall who could have helped me land a big snook that I eventually lost trying to catch by my self. This particular event taught me the importance of helping total strangers land big fish. That's why I exerted so much effort in helping a stranger catch a very large cobia in the bay that he'd hooked while fishing on the bridge. I heard the thrashing of a big fish, looked and saw the flashlight beam eliminating the head of the cobia. I quickly ran up the hill that connects the seawall to the bridge to offer help. After we landed the cobia the Asian man told he didn't know how they would have done it without my help and the use of my pier net.

Both the grouper and cobia were caught in very shallow water. A man came to the spot I was fishing in just as I took the gag grouper out of the water. He was very surprised that I'd caught one there because he said the water was only about eight feet deep. I was pitching a chartreuse colored jig under the bridge and bouncing it along the bottom when the 25 inch grouper inhaled the lure. It was a short fight that lasted all of about two minutes.
In this video you can clearly see the importance of keeping fish grippers clipped onto your pants at all times when fishing from seawalls. When I landed the gag grouper it was really easy to lean over the seawall and lip grab the fish with the grippers.
Fishing from shore in Florida can yield really large fish. I've seen pictures of big black and gag grouper caught near bridges and seawalls and heard stories of them being caught, but never really thought it would happen to me. One guy showed me four that he'd caught on jigs one night when I was bridge fishing. He's actually responsible for getting me started fishing with jigs.
