I absolutely love fishing for fast moving, hard hitting, saltwater Spanish mackerel. In this video I'm catching them on lures near the jetty in Florida. I generally keep several of this species of fish to eat when I initially discover that they are migrating through Florida waters.
How I rig for Spanish mackerel fishing:
1. Use forty to sixty pound test monofilament line for your leader. I usually tie a four to six foot leader line to the main line using a uni knot. Never use a swivel to attach the two lines because the mackerel will strike at the swivel and cut you off.
2. Tie your jig on using whatever knot you perfer. I like to tie a loop, clinch or polymer knot.
3. Always check to see if your line has been frayed and needs to be trimmed off while you are getting Spanish mackerel strikes. This is why I use a very long leader because with about every third Spanish mackerel that gets caught the leader needs to be trimmed and the jig retied.
4. Use whatever lure you prefer. I like to throw some sort of jig because they are very versatile to retrieve at different depths of water.
Spanish mackerel migrate through Florida waters and are a ton of fun to catch. When they are traveling in very large schools, you can hardly go wrong with just about any lure that you fish with as long as it's small and moving. Some people rig up small pieces of drinking straws on weighted hooks and catch them when they are in large schools and feeding.
In this video there were a lot of people fishing for Spanish mackerel all along the jetties, but I was catching more than anyone else. I honestly think it had to do with the lure I was fishing with and how I was fishing it.
I've heard some people say retrieve your lures really fast to attract a bite from the mackerel. I on the other hand say retrieve your lure several different ways until you discover what they are they most attracted to. In this video I wasn't retrieving the lure fast at all.
